Floor PlanYesterday I downloaded a free trial of SmartDraw.  Within three hours I had created detailed floor plans of my whole house.  It was so, so easy to do and I have no experience whatsoever with technical graphics packages. 

As a clutter clearer I often need to organise spaces.  This will be a perfect tool for me.  The only disadvantage I can see is that it does not do elevations. 

The programme includes a whole host of other features and uses which I haven’t looked into yet.

The 5 Easy Steps To Organization And Clutter Freedom

What we all want is an easy, pleasant environment that reflects our personalities, supports our lives and gives us pleasure. 

ORGANIZATION – it can sound like such a boring thing. One of the reasons for feeling cluttered is that your things are not organized.  Your energies will feel scattered and possibly you will feel out of control.  All you need is a rethink and to decide where you want things to go and a method to make sure that’s where they are. Once you have done this it will be so easy to keep it that way.   

The easiest way to approach organization is methodically and it will become a pleasure (honestly). 

Step One: Reality Check
Follow this link for your basic organization tool and here for one that has already been completed by one of my clients. Identify each room/area that you want to declutter/organize. 

Step Two: What Do You Want?
Take a walk around each room and decide what functions you want that room to fulfill.  This is the most important step and the most fun.  It creates the framework for everything that is to follow.  Enjoy it.  Think about how you want your life to work and how your ‘things’ can support you in that. 

Step Three: Create an Action List
Create a list of actions that you need to do in order for the rooms to support you.  For example if you’ve decided that the lounge is for reading and storing books, do you have somewhere for the books to live?  Is there enough lighting for reading comfortably? If not then add these ideas to your action list. 

Step Four: What Doesn’t belong?
Identify the things that do not belong in that room.  Where do they belong?  Are they just clutter that can be disposed of?  Do you need to create a ‘home’ for them as part of a function of another room? Remove everything that does not belong in that room and place it where it needs to go. 

Step Five: Working on Your Action List
Enjoy this step and make it fun.  Look through the Action List.  Which item on the list appeals to you the most?  What will be the most fun or make the most difference in your life?  Do that first.  In time you can work through the list until everything is just as you want it!  Enjoy!

Find the Perfect Time For Your Clutter Clearing

I got back from holiday last week full of energy and purpose and it struck me how important it is to work with life’s natural ebb and flow. 

How can we make clutter clearing as easy as possible?Being in flow is the most fantastic feeling in the world.  Moving effortlessly through life achieving everything you want to achieve.

Here is a brief list of questions designed to get you thinking about your perfect clutter clearing moments.  Print this off and spend a few moments with it.

When do you have more natural energy and motivation?

So what are your times of natural energy and motivation?  Can you identify any other situations or states of mind that will enhance your motivation to clutter clear?

If you work with the natural ebb and flow you can make your clutter clearing a more positive and happy experience.

I would still suggest you try the ten minute technique every day when you are struggling to get motivated but if you want a real splurge …. then use your natural flow to get stuck in!

That reminds me … I really need to use this technique to get on with the garden.  I’ll let you know how I get on!

The message I want to get across this month is:

Make Everything as Easy as possible for yourself!

When you are tackling your clutter/organization/time management ask yourself this question:

How can I make this easy?

Over the years I have discovered that systems that work contribute greatly to living effortlessly and more enjoyably. A small amount of time spent creating systems that work for you (and YOU is the operative word) will make your life more pleasant every day.

For example, I wanted to recycle in the kitchen but every day I would end up throwing everything in the same bin. When I eventually asked myself ‘How can I make this easy?’ the answer was then obvious – buy a second bin just for recycling! Easy! Sigh – why didn’t I think of that before?

In our society we greatly prize hard work and praise ourselves when we persevere, suffer and endure. Occasionally this is necessary but do we have to make our daily lives complicated and awkward when things can be so much more relaxed?

Easy does not mean lazy (I used to think that if it’s not painful it’s not worth doing).

5 Simple Steps to Making Things Easy

1) Identify an area where things are not working for you? What is the awkward or difficult thing about it? What is the sticking point?

“Never can find a pen”

2) Identify how you feel about the situation?

“Irritated. It’s not life or death but every day you have to scout about for a pen”

3) Identify how you want to feel about the situation and how you want it to be

“I want it to be easy. I don’t really want to have to give it too much thought”

4) Ask yourself how can I make this easy? Ask other people what they do.

5) Wait for a solution

Relax – the answer will come. You’ll know when it’s right because it will feel right

“I can get a mug I don’t use much and put all the pens I find in there. Next time I go to the shops I’m going to buy some cheap pens in bulk and top up the container”

Letting Go of Your Clutter

Sometimes we know that we have too much stuff that we don’t really want. Sometimes we find it hard to let go. This is common.

It might come in handy one day
I t was expensive
I feel guilty
I don’t know what to do with it
it might be worth something

Here are some reasons why letting go can be rewarding:

I can make space for new things, physical and emotional
I can live in the moment
it will be refreshing
it will give me a sense of freedom/release

Things are not just things
We attach value to items and so the things we decide to keep say a lot about ourselves.

Look around you. What are your things saying about your values?
Do you have lots of books because you value learning?
Do you have lots of gadgets because you value technology and fun?
Do you have lots of tools because you are creative?

As we change over time often we are left with ‘stuff’ that no longer represents what we value. This is when ‘letting go’ is important because the things that we are hanging on to no longer belong to the here and now and can hinder us.

How to let go? A Very Exciting Exercise
This is a fascinating and rewarding exercise which really gets to the bottom of things. It’s very simple and requires you to keep going to the end. This is crucial.

Take an item that you are finding it hard to let go of:

Ask the following question: What could happen if I let go of this?

Answer and then ask: And what could happen then?

Repeat this question 5-7 times and see what happens. You will find it very illuminating.

I did it this morning and am sharing my findings here with you:

Large CD Collection I hardly listen to

What could happen if I let go of this?
I wouldn’t have them any more

1. And what could happen next?
I wouldn’t be able to listen to that music ever again

2. And what could happen next?
I could download them off the internet

3. And what could happen next?
I would listen to them whenver I wanted

4. And what could happen next?
I probably wouldn’t listen to them much more than I do now

5. And what could happen next?
I’d realize that I don’t really listen to music very much. I like to think that I do but the truth is I don’t. I choose to do other things and when I do listen to music it’s either on the radio or the odd favourite cd.

6. And what could happen next?
Keep the odd favourite cd and pass the rest on!

One of the Laws of Attraction relates to being grateful for what we already have.

I decided at the weekend that I'm going to use this blog to really focus on what I am grateful for and salute the people who have helped me on my wonderful journey into coaching and business.

In our course, Attraction Marketing, Annie Meachem from Trellis Coaching has asked us to find three things everyday to be grateful for.
